Punk Politics: The Evolution of Rebellion

Punk Political Noise

Hello and welcome to a historical look at the evolution of punk politics in music from the 1980s to the mid 2000s. My name is Anthony Snellings and I created this website as part of my Master of Arts thesis in History at California State University San Marcos. This website works with a written thesis that looks at the creation of Punk Voter, which was a website created by Fat Mike Burkett of the punk band NOFX. My work focuses on how punk politics changed over time and how that impacted the creation and trajectory of the Rock Against Bush political movement that was an extension of Punk Voter. The purpose and design of this website is to trace the history of punk thought as evidenced by the music created by punks beginning in the 1980s and leading into the mid 2000s.
The format of this website follows the chronology of punk music culminating in the creation of the Rock Against Bush compilation albums in 2004. Each section is broken up by decade with a separate section being dedicated to the compilations. These sections will analyze how music played a role in the conveying of punk thought, emphasizing the political nature of the lyrics and the change in sound and reception of the music. This focuses primarily on American punk bands and their responses to politics in the United States. As will be seen throughout, the lyrics of punk bands that were popular in each period tended to create more political lyrics that targeted conservative presidents.
